Matthew was the Tax collector from Capernaum that Jesus chose as His disciple.  He is credited with writing this 1rst book of the new testament, called The Gospel of Matthew.  A “gospel” means that is an account.  In this case it seems very clear that he wants to document Jesus life and ministry.  He lays out Jesus geniology, proving He is the decendent of David, the root of Jesie.  He proves He is the son of God, the King, and the promised savior. He also documents many of Jesus miricles.
